Living Room: Getting Started

Sometimes getting started is the hardest part.

You think… should I buy those wonderful accent chairs if I haven’t picked out my artwork yet?  I’m in love with those throw pillows, but yikes – I haven’t even chosen a rug yet.  If I buy that lamp now, what if it doesn’t work with the side tables?

I’ve heard these concerns several times, and really it all comes down to: where to start. To keep it simple, here are a few tips: 1. Start by considering the permanent items in the room: flooring, built-ins, etc. 2. Choose your main furniture pieces: keeping in mind coordinating fabrics. 3. Choose your main accents: rugs, lighting, accent furniture pieces. 4. Choose artwork. 5. Add in accessories: those fun pops that really bring the room to life, and make it feel finished.

These considerations can change depending on your project – but to keep it simple, follow one rule: Start with the biggest pieces, and work your way down to the small details.

The consideration of paint color can come in at different times depending on your project.  You may need to choose the paint early on – so that the painting can be completed before the flooring is installed.  However, if your project allows you to wait until after you have a few finishes and fabrics, that is best.  This is why: There may be 100 options of sofa fabrics, but there are thousands of paint colors to choose from.  It’s easier to choose the item with more limited options, then finding a paint color to match.

I’m currently helping a client redesign their living room space.  I created these inspiration boards as a way to get the conversation started about the direction of the room.  Notice how I’ve only shown a few of the items in the room: rug, chair, side table, and lamp.  The flooring, paint colors, and main furniture pieces were already in place.

The images gave us a great place to start talking about the components that she liked, and the ones she didn’t like: a wonderful way to get focused direction for a beautiful room!

Which one is your favorite?
